Occasionally on my blog, or in between my travel posts, I will write something from a personal nature. I have other blogs for that but I am trying to get away from different blogs and I want to start combining all of my stuff in one place, here, on Girl Gad About.
Now, on with the topic at hand – Girl Crushes. I cannot take credit for this topic, I stole it from The Writeous Babe Project. Javacia is the Writeous Babe, she is a freelance journalist and educator. She is also quickly becoming one of my real life girl crushes. I am so glad to know someone who lives close by who has the same thoughts and dreams as I do and who encourages others to go for it. I can’t wait to meet her this Friday in Birmingham for the Alabama Bloggers luncheon.
My biggest, and by far, the most famous girl crush I have is with Meryl Streep. I’ve loved her from day one. Her acting is impeccable and what I like best about her is that it seems that Meryl is Meryl. She has all of her original parts, makes no apology for being in her 60s, and she’s been married to the same man from the beginning (1978), raised their kids together and everything. I know, right?! Shocking.
There doesn’t seem to be anything hidden when it comes to Meryl Streep. She has been steadfast and consistent with her career with no real scandals that I can remember or find anyway. Her devotion to her family while having an incredible acting career is something I admire tremendously, in any woman for that matter. Meryl doesn’t seem pretentious or demanding when it comes to her film roles, either that or she has an incredible PR person.
The next big girl crush I have is Tina Turner. Need I say more? Oh but I will.
I love a story about coming back from being down and out or a hard knock life and Tina sure is the epitome of those scenarios. You all know about Tina before and after Ike – I don’t need to rehash it for you.
When I think of Tina Turner I think about all the obstacles she had to overcome to get to where she is today. Besides loving her music I just think she is a class act all the way. Plus, she’s still out there in her 70s doing her thing.
I have a hang up with my age and not having done anything significant with my life but when I think about Meryl Streep and Tina Turner out there, still working, I have hope.
For somewhat of a more realistic girl crush we move on to Jennine Jacob – or The Coveted – as you may know her. It’s not so much the fashion that I like about Jennine, although she does have an eye for it, but it is what she has done with her passion. It’s not so much about making a name for herself but it’s what she has done to help other bloggers is the amazing story. Jennine Jacob is the force behind Independent Fashion Bloggers.
Independent Fashion Bloggers was started by Jennine because she had a need for it herself. When she first started out as a brand new blogger she found she had a ton of questions and a desire to learn. As she learned she started sharing with others and the Independent Fashion Bloggers community was born. Even though I am not a fashion blogger (anymore) I still find her site informative for any blogger who wants to seriously succeed.
Here is a great interview with Jennine Jacob.
And what sort of wanderlust-stricken kind of person would I be if I didn’t mention Samantha Brown? Samantha’s travel show on The Travel Channel was probably the first serious viewing I did on a cable network (more than 10 years ago) and to me it was more like a reality show before reality show became famous.
I loved tuning in to see where Ms Brown was off to and what adventures she was having; the hotels, the food, the people, the culture…she always took me with her.
Eventually I did stop watching for whatever reason; husband died, trying to raise two children, getting a job, you know, those kinds of things distracted me for a while but I am happy to find out that Samantha is still traveling and taking us with her via the Travel Channel.
I have a whole slew of other girl crushes both famous and your regular every day women. This post has gotten way too long as it is though so I’ll have to end it here. This is a topic I’ll have to continue with and keep posting on in the future.
